Should I continue my investment in Gilt Funds

Really great to see the contents and articles in your website. Truly enriching. Glad to come across. Would like to ask one suggestion regarding investment in Gilt Fund.Invested in Franklin Government Securities Fund Long Term Direct. In losses after the recent RBI decision in Feb, 2017. Is it advisable to continue till it turns positive or shift to any other suitable fund? Appreciate your advice on this. Thanks?

Thanks for the kind words about our website which we truly appreciate.

Please note that investing in mutual funds should be based on your risk taking ability and investment horizon. We do not know why you have invested in Gilt Funds but what we can say is that investing in Gilt Funds can be volatile sometime based on RBI's monetary policy announcement and so on so forth.

If you are a retail investor and do not want to take any kind of risk but want better than fixed deposit returns, you may invest in income funds provided you have an investment horizon of 2-3 years.

On the other hand if you can take moderate risk then investing in balanced funds or large cap funds make sense. Similarly for high risk takers investing in diversified equity funds and mid cap funds makes sense.

Therefore, first assess your risk profile and see the suitable fund categories from here https://www.advisorkhoj.com/tools-and-calculators/asset-allocation

With regards to your current Gilt Fund investment, you may switch it to an income fund of Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund.

Thanks for writing to Advisorkhoj!
